OUR APOLOGIES WE JUST REALIZED THAT BAKING SODA HAD BEEN OMITTED FROM OUR RECIPE

Aunt Aleta's Gingerbread Cookies

Our family's favorite gingerbread recipe comes from Eric's sister.  We love them soft!

1/2 cup Shortening or Coconut oil (trying to stay healthy we recently switched to coconut oil but the original recipe calls for shortening) Butter may work as well.

1 cup brown sugar

1 1/2 cup molasses

2/3 cup water

2 tsp salt

2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp each; allspice, ginger, cloves, cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

2-3 tsp vanilla (this is our addition, we love our vanilla)

6-7 cups flour (you need a sticky consistency before chilling)

Mix all ingredients together, slowly adding flour until a sticky consistency.

Refrigerate to chill (we usually make the dough one day and then make cookies the next)

Roll out and cut.  Decorate with your candy decorations! Get creative; this is our kids favorite part!  Bake at 350 F for 8-15 min.

We like our cookies soft so to keep them soft you remove them from the oven when they are puffed up!  Yum Yum!
